U.S. Patent and Trademark Office surpasses major trademark goals for fiscal year 2025

By Olivia Turowski

In fiscal year 2025, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) exceeded all their major trademark performance goals. In their bulletin, the USPTO attributed the increased productivity of examining attorneys as the reason for the lowering of the inventory of unexamined patent applications to 346,378. [1]

Fiscal Year 2025

In comparison, FY 2024 ended with 767,138 new classes filed, an average of 7.5 months for first action pendency, and an average of 14.1 months for disposal pendency. [3]

As for applications, applicants filed over 824,000 new classes in FY 2025. [2]

To maintain excellent performance and lower these numbers further, the USPTO has stated they’ll be hiring more trademark examining attorneys in 2026. [2]
